Once a bustling theater in a thriving district, Shea's Downtown is a reclaimed community space in Downtown Ashtabula.

Opened originally in 1949, the Shea’s Theater is one of the last remaining examples of Streamline Moderne architecture, serving as a prime gathering space for community entertainment for decades. The iconic Shea’s building goes beyond unique architecture, holding years of history from Downtown Ashtabula’s prime — a busy street full of shops, restaurants, tourists and locals alike.

Closed and abandoned for good in 1982, the Shea’s building has seen numerous attempts at restoration and reimagination, most recently serving as the area’s Senior Center until 2012. A few changes in hands of ownership later, John Ellis of Pinnacle Properties LLC, purchased the property in 2023 and is currently spearheading the reclamation of the building.

The reclamation will be done in three phases: office space on the second floor, revamp of the first floor previously used by the Senior Center, and finally, reclamation of the theater space. With the help of Michael Hurwitz, a theater restoration expert, Shea’s will once again serve as a community space for all to enjoy.
